New Layout Tabs and Spacing
Just got the update with the new layout as default. Not a fan. I used settings to disable New Entry Layout. Now the display is stuck displaying a groups content in the sidebar and no way to get back to other groups.
The new layout also really messed with my existing tabs and spacing. Do not like.
Please continue to provide the old layout as an option going forward.

Hi Bill, thanks for the feedback!
Can you give an example screenshot showing the things you mentioned? Then I can see how we can make this work for you.The new layout uses a monospaced font which should actually help with formatting.
We will add an option to the app to allow everybody to choose the preferred font for Notes, that will make it easy to make this behave exactly as before. Although the idea is still that the monospaced font should be making it easier to format the text, so I'm very interested in your screenshot.
Richard.

Hi Richard, I did a search on a unique group name and the groups appeared in the sidebar.
Are you requesting a screenshot of that issue or of my tabs / spacing issue?

Here are a couple of screenshots of my tab/space issue. It is probably do my me inconsistently using tabs and/or spacing to align text. Regardless, I really don't want to have to edit 500 entries to “pretty” things up.

The new layout has not touched the search or sidebar, so anything not working as it should there is probably best addressed in a separate ticket (or post). A screenshot would help indeed.
Normally you would need to clear the search box to return to the full list of groups/entries.

I understand and your assumption is very likely causing this. The (not yet available) option for selecting your own font will work for you, as it will allow you to use the non-monospaced font.

If I can cause a reoccurrence of the sidebar issue, I'll open a new ticket.
The capability to select my own font would be great. Will future versions of the app allow me to disable the new layout until the font capability is available?
Thanks for the prompt responses. Unbelievable on the day before Christmas. :-) Go home and enjoy your family.

I'll make sure the font selection is available before the legacy layout is removed, no worries.
I am already home btw, happy holidays!

We can only agree with that. We have over 1000 entries each.
We run an interdisciplinary consulting practice with over 20 years of research activity.
Basically, we are therefore actually quite lenient. Nevertheless, it is annoying that even top-class computer scientists are participating in the global crisis of the intellectual-historical development of our brain structures, which, just like 500 years ago with the introduction of the printing press, caused centuries of chaos and are currently once again leading to a blatant increase in warlike behaviour. From the very gentle way in which software users are now being forced to use AI to the large-scale killing of people in other contexts, such as in Ukraine/Russia or Palestine/Israel.
But we understand that hardly anyone understands this, otherwise it wouldn't happen. And we see time and again how our clients are amazed to realise that they themselves are creating problems that they supposedly want to solve. So what can be said about huvisoft in one (small aspect)?
* It's not a good idea to destroy users' workflows with forced gratification. At best, this is a zero-sum game for users. In the worst case, however, workflows of seconds become workflows of minutes - times X!
* it is not a good idea to enforce an unchangeable font size in iOS/iPadOS, which makes it difficult to quickly orientate oneself in existing inventories, even in the headings, and thus prevents users from being able to work in a "jiffy".
* it is not a good idea to force an unchangeable font size in iOS/iPadOS, which turns complex structured workflows stored in notes into gibberish and makes them unreadable, turning seconds into even more minutes - every time.
* It's not a good idea to force fields to be hidden, creating additional clicks and further ergonomic problems. This also speaks against "zig-zag" working.
* It's not a good idea not to believe that users will use your software for its intended purpose and that "wrong" forced improvements will make parts of your software unusable.Still, we love (loved?) the software. And since the micro-end of the world does not yet mean the Thirty Years' War, best wishes and a Merry Christmas.

Thanks for providing your feedback Wolfgang!
The font size has always been unchangeable, so there is no added restriction in this respect. On iOS/iPadOS the app follows Dynamic Type fonts to improve accessibility, again, that has not changed.
One of the key points of the new layout is to enable introducing custom fonts (in future updates), as the layout is now responsive, which is important both on iPad and Mac. Even on iPhone you will already notice that when going from portrait to landscape mode.
Wrt fields being hidden: the next update (10.6.3) will automatically show all common fields when you Edit an entry. Not while viewing an entry, which I don't think would add anything. So that should eliminate the additional clicks you mentioned.
Do let me know if you have a specific workflow that is currently affected.
An example would be nice like the screenshots above, that helps to address this efficiently.

On second thought, I've reverted this change.
Why? Because the default system font (which has always been used) is not selectable in the font panel provided by macOS (the same holds for iOS), which Apple does on purpose. So, no matter which font you would select, the formatting of the notes would never be exactly the same as in the legacy layout.
So, instead, pwSafe will first provide an option to toggle between fixed/variable-width font. The fixed-width is the default of the new layout, by flipping this you will get the exact same font as used by the legacy layout, making sure the notes look exactly the same as before.
I have just submitted update 10.6.3 for macOS to Apple that includes this improvement (and several others).
For iOS this improvement will be included in 10.6.4.
Extending this to allowing selecting arbitrary fonts is still a good idea (for a future update), but needs a more extended user-interface to allow selecting both the system provided font (fixed and variable) and the custom font.
Adding just the toggle now fits in that concept and solves the reported issue.

I have taken this one step further: in addition to the new option as described above, the default for this option will be OFF (use proportional font) as used by the legacy layout. Whoever prefers the (new) monospaced font can simply enable it using the option.
Here is how this will be released:
- macOS
- 10.6.3 (submitted to Apple) includes the new toggle.
The default is “ON”, you can switch it off. - 10.6.4 changes the default to “OFF”, any changes done with 10.6.3 will be honored.
- 10.6.3 (submitted to Apple) includes the new toggle.
- iOS
- 10.6.4 (submitted to Apple) introduces the toggle, with default set to “OFF”.

Apple has just released 10.6.3 for macOS!
Bill27950 you should now be able to update here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pwsafe-password-safe-compatible/id520993579?mt=12
After that, you should see the new option as shown above. Just switch the bottom one OFF and your notes should be displayed as they always did.
Let me know how this works for you!

Richard,
I just installed the the update on macOS. It works as you described. As always, thanks for your fantastic support.
Happy New Year!

Excellent, thanks for confirming that Bill.
Best wishes to you too!

One further comment. A minor interface issue. When viewing an “item” withing a “group”, there is a header line that contains the “group”, “item”, and and edit button.
When a scroll a long note, the header line is overlayed and both show. Not as slick as your software usually is.

Yes, good point. The two buttons in the bottom-right corner were fixed in one of the last updates, they now have a partially transparent background as shown in your screenshot above.
Need to extend that idea to the top line. Will look into that.

Just committed the fix for this. Will be included in 10.6.5 (somewhere next year 😎).

Wolfgang Poppitz Apple released the 10.6.4 update, so it's your turn!
Here's the update link for iOS: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pwsafe-2-password-safe-compatible/id938922963?ls=1&mt=8
Please let me know if there are any remaining issues with the new layout.

First of all: we are really very impressed by your support!!! (For once with 3 exclamation marks.) Thank you very much!
Since 2012, we have only been using Ipads with and without keyboards to do our day-to-day business on servers and offline. MacBooks and PCs are only used specifically or in exceptional cases for fixed workflows that only work there.
In this respect, the MacBook preferences are of little use to us. However, your answers probably refer to them, as has been verified in the meantime.
RELATED TO iPAD VERSION 10.6.4 ! :
To fields:
Unfortunately, the very (!) important field Email is still missing completely. We now have to write it in the notes and can no longer activate it with a click. Or we would have to duplicate existing entries, empty them and fill them in again, which would not exactly save time either, but would save us having to transfer e-mail addresses from notes to the e-mail field later.
About the font sizes:
Our wording was probably imprecise. We meant: if a new large font then at least changeable. For ergonomic reasons, a larger font is helpful unless there are other reasons against it. However, user interests are heterogeneous, including those of individual users who actually urgently need a larger font.
[For database applications, it would therefore be ideal if a field fills the screen when clicked and disappears again when clicked. We have already implemented something like this elsewhere. But we don't want to jailbreak the iPads. But that's not the point here. ]
The current HUGE font unfortunately also smashes our information in the title bar, etc.
About notes:
The gobbledygook of structured info is largely gone now, but the numerous breaks due to the larger font make it confusing to look at quickly. A changeable font size would also help here, but unfortunately this ruins your good idea of displaying certain field entries larger. Nundenn: Life consists of more or less good/bad compromises.
Thank you once again for your exemplary activities, which were not really to be expected during the festive season. We really, really appreciate it.

Hi Wolfgang,
Let me first give a short response to your email, so you get (hopefully) quick answers first. I will provide a more detailed response tomorrow.
- Fields: the Email field is not shown when you tap the Edit button, but it is available to you. Just tap the ‘+’ button at the bottom right and select Email to make it appear. Most people don't use that field anymore as the username usually equals the email address nowadays. Is this a good solution for you, or would you prefer to have an option to show this Email field by default?
- Font sizes: the font in the title bar has not changed. For fields shown below the title bar, the 10.6.4 version should automatically reduce the font size in case the text does not fit, so all text should be visible. If you experience otherwise, could you please email me a screenshot of an example? Also please include the iPad model type so I can reproduce / address it.
The intended behavior is: use the larger font size if it fits, if not then fallback to the old sizing.
- Notes: the app should now use the exact same font as it always did, so the font for notes should not be larger. Same as the item above: if you see anything else, a screenshot would be very helpful.
Thanks for working with us to get this right,
Richard.

Hello Richard,
I haven't found an imprint, but I suspect that Huvisoft is not based in Europe. Normal is, for us, what we are used to, for better or for worse. Whether American, African, Chinese, Greenlandic etc., everyone knows what is normal, but it really isn't the same. And only the intersections unite us as human beings. And in conflict and war, not even that.
The human-machine interface of the device also has the special feature that the body develops a life of its own when working quickly. Everyone knows this from driving a car. The body is driving and after the accident the cognition can't keep up because it was mainly occupied with something else. The learner driver has a big advantage here.
TO THE EMAIL FIELD:
Not only in DE but also in other parts of the world I need the NAME and EMAIL field at least occasionally, because some websites require both. That's why we use email as the default account name field and then (as with Huvisoft) the name field as well. According to the motto "Don't make me think when I'm busy with my work", the email field is the most important thing for us! The name could be filed under Notes, but then you have to think again and search for it if necessary.
[ It's also irritating when driving a car if the light switch appears in a different place when you change models. ]
TO THE PLUS SIGN IN THE CONTEXT OF THE EDIT MODE:
Ok, mea culpa. This is new. Previously, the plus sign only existed outside the edit mode and only for new entries [or].
TO SCREENSHOTS:
They only make sense to us if they provide clear information for differentiation without the possibility of interpretation. In the case of the font size, we can no longer take screenshots of the old version. This time we include one.
TO THE TITLE FIELD:
This is now only available in edit mode and then between "<Entries" [left] and "Edit" [right] at the top above the group/directory name.
ABOUT THE FONT SIZE:
Super can be clearly seen in the screenshot in the URL field.
We can live with it. Let's leave it at that. It's less annoying than fiddling with the navigation system while driving when Google puts some stupid message over it again.
Thank you very much
Wolfgang Poppitz

Hi Wolfgang,
Huvisoft is based in The Netherlands, so I think we are relatively close to each other..
I've just added this info the footer of the pwsafe.app website, in case others want to know it too.I agree that we should keep changes to the minimum, only when there are compelling reasons to do so. Which I think is the case for the new layout, as we tried to explain in this article.
The ‘+’ in edit mode is new indeed, it allows keeping that dialog clutter free as more fields will become available. For example. in the 10.6.5 version a new option will appear there to attach a photo to an entry.
Thanks for the screenshots, at first sight I think all fields are clearly visible. The title is too long to fit in the bar, as the font hasn't changed in the bar that will also have been the case in the previous layout.
If you find a specific example that is not shown correctly, please do not hesitate to open a support ticket (there is a Support Request option in the Settings of the app) and we will further improve the app.
Have a great day,
Richard.
