The new “Show Barcode” feature in PwSafe offers a secure and efficient way to display passwords as Code 128 barcodes, enabling users to scan them directly from their device screens using standard barcode scanners. This functionality is especially useful for users managing numerous accounts, loyalty cards, or systems that rely on barcode input.
Why This Feature Matters
The feature addresses several practical needs:
- Travel light: Replace physical cards with digital barcodes stored in PwSafe.
- Convenient access: Scan passwords directly into login fields using a USB barcode scanner.
- Cross-platform compatibility: Works seamlessly across macOS, Windows, and Linux.
- Security-conscious design: Avoids sharing passwords with third-party apps or cloud services.
How It Works
- A new context menu option—“Show Barcode”—is available when viewing password details.
- On iOS: Long-press the password field.
- On macOS: Right-click the password field.
- When selected, the password is rendered as a Code 128 barcode.
- The barcode is displayed without revealing the username or other entry details, allowing users to safely present only the barcode to scanners.
Technical Details
- Barcode Format: Code 128, chosen for its native support across operating systems and compatibility with inexpensive scanners.
- Character Support: ASCII characters (0–127) only. If a password contains unsupported characters, the barcode option will be disabled.
