This article aims to help you understand why you need a solid backup, while providing an easy solution at the same time.
What’s the risk?
Many users assume that cloud storage—like iCloud or Dropbox—automatically protects their data. While convenient, cloud storage isn’t foolproof. Files can be lost due to:
- Accidental deletion
- Expired retention policies
- Sync errors or corrupted uploads
- Account issues or service outages
Your safe contains sensitive, irreplaceable data. If it disappears, recovery may be impossible.
Some cloud providers offer file revisions or recently deleted file recovery. These features are helpful—but they’re not a substitute for a proper backup.
To put this into perspective: lost safes from cloud storage are our #1 support request. While we’re often able to help users recover their data, there are cases where recovery is simply not possible.
If your safe matters, it needs a real backup.
What’s the solution?
We recommend subscribing to the pwSafe Cloud. This automatically backs up your safe after every change and retains those backups indefinitely. To subscribe, simply tap the Cloud button at the bottom of the pwSafe app (or press ⌘⌥C on Mac) and follow the wizard.
At just $0.75/month (with a yearly subscription), it’s a small price for peace of mind.
Prefer to use your own backup strategy? That’s totally fine—just be sure to set it up properly and monitor it regularly. The responsibility is yours.
Imagine...
You lost your iPhone. While installing your new iPhone, you discover that—for some obscure reason—your old iPhone did not synchronize your iCloud Drive for the past six months. All your recent password changes are gone.
Then you remember your pwSafe Cloud subscription. Quickly you connect your new iPhone to the pwSafe Cloud and download your safe including all recent changes. You breathe a sigh of relief.
Tip
Think of your backup like a spare key. You hope you never need it—but when you do, it’s priceless.
