In April 2024, maintenance of the pwSafe app was transferred from App77 to Huvisoft. Below is the original announcement for historical reference.
After 13 years, time has come for a change. As of today, pwSafe has a new owner, one that
can give it the love it needs. Richard Huveneers is an active iOS indie developer, just like I once
was when I started pwSafe. His existing app, Disk Decipher, also focus on cryptography,
security, and privacy.
As you might have noticed, for the last several years, pwSafe had almost no meaningful
updates. Some of you who have contacted me directly know the reason: I took on a regular 9
to 5 job which leaves me no time to focus on pwSafe. I kept the app working through Apple
and Dropbox updates, but couldn’t do anything beyond life support. That was not fair to the
amazing community of tens of thousands of people who use and trust the app regularly.
It was not easy to find a suitable home for pwSafe, and that’s why it took so long. I never
wanted for it to be littered with ads, made into a weekly subscription, or otherwise deviate from
its purpose as a simple, open-source-based password manager users can depend on. More
importantly, I wanted to find a developer or company who shares the goals that led to the
creation of pwSafe back in 2011. I am confident Richard is that person.
As a user of pwSafe myself (993 entries and counting), I’m excited about the app’s future. As
Richard takes over the app, he plans on adding missing features like the Mac auto-fill
extension and fix small and irritating little bugs that have crept up as new OS releases came
about.
In his words:
pwSafe has been on an impressive journey during more than a decade. I am excited to
takeover maintenance of this app, fully respecting and continuing the ecosystem build by
App77.
pwSafe is a unique app and I intend to push that even further.
One of the first visible changes will be to replace PayPal payments with in-app payments. This
will provide a more integrated and safe experience and reduce administrative overhead,
allowing me to spend more time on improving the app. When this change is available, existing
users will be notified to switch to the new model, without any change in functionality or costs.
After that, development efforts will go to adding several much requested features. Requests
submitted in the past will guide this process initially.
